How to Apply

Spanish Market is a highly-competitive juried show. All Spanish Market artists must be at least ¼ Hispanic and born and/or raised in New Mexico or Southern Colorado. Artists not native-born to this area must demonstrate that they have participated in the culture and have a definite historic and cultural connection to New Mexico. "Historic and cultural" is defined in terms of genealogy, location, and participation in the culture. Copies of the "Guidelines for Spanish Market," which outline the accepted standards for each traditional art form, are available from the Spanish Colonial Arts Society, (505) 982-2226.

New applicants must participate in an initial screening process, and all accepted artists are re-screened periodically to ensure that the quality of their work is maintained. Applications and Guidelines are mailed to new applicants (and to current Spanish Market artists wishing to screen into a new art category) in late August; applications and slides/photographs of sample works are pre-screened by the Standards Committee in October; and a final screening of actual works of art is conducted in January by an independent panel of judges. The January screening is highly competitive; only a handful of exceptional artists are accepted annually. Artists accepted at the January screening are then invited to participate in Spanish Market and Winter Market.
